Heather Anderson

Lead Interpreter

Heather has been with Perspectives since 2001. She started as a Direct Support Professional and, after completing her interpreter training at Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf in 2009, transitioned into the role of interpreter. Heather is a seasoned and highly skilled interpreter with experience in various settings, particularly excelling in assignments involving challenging dynamics or conflict resolution. She is currently pursuing Legal Interpreting to become an even greater asset to the Rhode Island Deaf community.


What's your Why?
"Removing barriers to ensure that Deaf individuals have access whenever and wherever they need it. I believe this fosters autonomy and reduces frustration. I also love exploring language, finding the perfect words, signs, or phrases to reflect the speaker's tone and intent. The most enjoyable part of my work is that no two days are ever the same!"

Rosa Norberg

Interpreting Coordinator/Staff Interpreter

Rosa began her interpreting career in 1989, and became RID Certified in 2001. Rosa joined the Perspectives team in 2019. As a seasoned interpreter, she is comfortable interpreting in a variety of settings and recently added theater interpreting. She loves being able to work outside of her comfort zone and to continue her professional growth in her work with Perspectives. She has been an ongoing active member in the local RI Chapter of RID.


What's your Why?
"I chose to come to Perspectives full time because of the family-like team atmosphere. I love to work with the Deaf community as an ally and interpreter to break down barriers on a daily basis. Perspectives allows individuals to use their strengths in the most effective way."

Curtiss James

While attending his Interpreter Training Program at Northeastern University, Curtiss worked for the RI Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as a referral specialist. This position allowed him to work closely within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, build relationships, and learn important laws pertaining to language access. Curtiss worked as a contract interpreter for many years before joining the Perspectives team full time in January of 2022. His experience has covered a myriad of settings, but has a significant amount of time working in educational, medical and mental health settings.


What's your Why?
"I found my love for ASL and supporting people with IDD at the age of 15 when I worked at a camp for children with disabilities and I met a young lady who was hard of hearing that used ASL to communicate. I am excited to work here at Perspectives as it has brought me full circle and reinvigorated two of my passions: working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and people with differing abilities."

Lindsay Mullowney

Lindsay has been connected with Perspectives since 2008, starting with a job at the agency's summer camp. Her commitment to service led her to volunteer overseas at several schools for the Deaf, which inspired her to return to school in 2017 to study interpreting where she held an internship with Perspectives. This opportunity led her to stay on as Interpreter Coordinator while gaining more skills in the field. She went on to earn national certification and began working as a licensed interpreter at Perspectives in the fall of 2021. With experience across various settings, Lindsay excels particularly in smaller group environments.

Jill Confreda

Jill completed an interpreting internship with Perspectives in the spring of 2021 during the last semester of her Interpreter Training Program from Kent State University. After graduation, she started working at the RI School for the Deaf as support staff for three years while she prepared to earn her interpreter certification. She interpreted for Perspectives as a volunteer during this time for Special Olympics, Best Buddies, and other events the people we support would attend. She came back to work for Perspectives full time as a staff interpreter after obtaining her interpreting license in June of 2024. She has ample experience working with youth, students, and families across various settings. Jill takes a keen interest in the medical field and enjoys interpreting in those settings.


What's your Why?
"Perspectives is the only company I've seen that has addressed the needs of the IDD community within the Deaf population. I appreciate having the privilege of providing access to the Deaf community both internally and externally to the company. The culture and atmosphere at work is supportive and collaborative everyday. Carmen graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology for her Interpreter Training Program in 2021. Her career has taken her to many different states interpreting in a variety of settings. Her previous experience largely consists of post-secondary work for college and graduate classes. She landed at Perspectives in February of 2024, and loves any chance to apply her minor degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology to medical interpreting assignments to reduce gaps in healthcare communication.

JO Welch began her interpreting career in 1993 since then she has cultivated specialties in social justice/DEI, Business/Leadership, Performing Arts, Education, Trilingual Settings with Latina/e communities, working in the DeafBlind community and more. As a first generation Latine/x that grew up navigating the complexities of existing in a marginalized space between two cultures, she prioritizes inclusion and engagement in her work. Ariela started with Perspectives in March of 2022. As one of the ASL schedulers, Ariela processes incoming interpreter requests for internal Perspectives needs, and external community needs. With several interpreters all with different strengths and areas of expertise, Ariela works to fill each request with the best matched interpreter/s while balancing everyone's schedules. As a Deaf person herself, she understands first hand the value of having qualified interpreters and accessibility.


What's your Why?
"I moved to Rhode Island from Texas to work at Perspectives after seeing advertisements for jobs in a Deaf environment. Having grown up in Connecticut, I was happy to be back in New England. I've stayed here, because I love the positive Deaf friendly environment and being able to engage with everyone on the team everyday."

Shirley Viera

ASL Scheduler

Shirley started working at Perspectives in 2021 as a Direct Support Professional for Deaf Services working in residential group homes and community based services as well. Being a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) with several other Deaf family members, Shirley understands the importance of language accessibility. As the interpreting department has grown, Shirley joined the team in August of 2024 as an additional ASL Scheduler to assist with filling interpreter requests.


What's your Why?
"In high school I worked as a volunteer with IDD individuals, it's where my heart has always been. I would teach some signs to those that were nonverbal as a way to communicate. Being a CODA with experience working with the IDD community, I knew working for Perspectives Deaf Services is where I could combine my two passions and provide positive support."
