Perspectives offers ASL classes at levels ranging from beginner to advanced, in a friendly, fun and supportive environment at our locations throughout Rhode Island.

Perspectives' American Sign Language classes are designed to help professionals who support children, adolescents and adults who use sign language as a primary means of communication.
Teachers, parents, family members, friends and caregivers will also benefit greatly from taking these classes as they build the necessary skills to communicate with the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing person.

ASL TRUE+WAY | LEVEL 1a
CLASS DESCRIPTION
This is a 'voice off' class where students will begin using the new digital TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum covering Unit 1 (Welcome to the Deaf World!) and Unit 2 (Academics). Students signing up for this level may range from no sign experience to moderate sign experience. Topics covered include; Immersion, Learning ASL, the 'Alphabet' and Handshapes, ASL parameters and signing space, introductions, and many other exciting topics. Students will begin to develop ASL grammar comprehension along with receptive and expressive skills at this level. Information on Deaf culture and awareness will also be integrated into this class.
ASL TRUE+WAY | LEVEL 2a
CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class continues with the new digital TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum covering Unit 7 (It's All About Food) and Unit 8 (People Among Us). As in Levels 1a, 1b and 1c, this class will be held completely 'voice off' and will focus on using learned vocabulary to create conversations and discussion using ASL grammar and structure. Examples of topics of discussion include; various food such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, sweets, drinks, regional cuisines, and recipes. Prerequisite: TRUE+WAY ASL 1a,1b and 1c.
ASL TRUE+WAY | LEVEL 1b
CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class continues with the new digital TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum covering Unit 3 (Family and Relationships) and Unit 4 (Residences and Communities). As in Level 1a, this class will be held completely 'voice off' and will focus on using learned vocabulary to create conversations and discussion using ASL grammar and structure. Examples of topics of discussion include; family, friends and pets, relationship status, employment status, life milestones, transportation, residences, and neighborhoods. Possible addition of Unit 5 (Scheduling) and Unit 6 (Good Times) depending on pace of class. Prerequisite: TRUE+WAY ASL 1a or similar coursework.
ASL TRUE+WAY | LEVEL 1c
CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class continues with the new digital TRUE+WAY ASL curriculum covering Unit 5 (Scheduling) and Unit 6 (Good Times). As in Level 1a and 1b, this class will be held completely 'voice off' and will focus on using learned vocabulary to create conversations and discussion using ASL grammar and structure. Examples of topics of discussion include; calendar and time expressions, events, errands, daily activities and frequency, insights and skills, hobbies and interests, sports and recreation along with vacation and snacks. Prerequisite: TRUE+WAY ASL 1a and 1b or similar coursework.
