Will McGiveney was recently named September's Employee of the Month at Wal-Mart Supercenter in North Kingstown, RI. Will, a confident, amicable young man in his 20s, has been working at Wal-Mart for about six months now. Twenty hours a week, you can find Will working in the Lawn and Garden Department as an Associate. His job consists of seasonal stocking, assisting customers with gardening supplies, watering plants and even helping out as a cashier if needed. Essentially, Will stated, he has become a "Jack of all trades".
Six months ago, when Will started, he received job supports from Perspectives Corporation. After a couple of weeks of employment, however, those supports were phased out and now Will works independently. Although he does sometimes utilizes Perspectives Corporation for transportation services, Will mostly takes the RIPTA bus to and from work, which he has been using for 8 years!
A Man of Many Interests
In addition to transportation services, Will receives Community Based supports from Perspectives Corporation as well as Shared Living Arrangements (SLA). Will spent his childhood living in youth group homes, until he was adopted at the age of 16. Now, as an adult, Will has moved out of his adopted family's home and into an SLA where he can enjoy the benefits of living with a family, but have the independence of living on his own. He has been living in a Shared Living Arrangement since July 2015.
Outside of work and home life, Will is a man of many interests. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, bowling, golfing and fishing. Will and his brother routinely get together for a night out every Thursday; and because of his employment, Will can not only partake in these activities, but he can also treat himself to things like a new TV or more importantly, pay his bills.
A Dedicated Worker
Will expresses that the work environment is what he likes most about his position at Wal-Mart. "Everyone is friendly and always positive", Will smiles. When asked what the most important part about his job is, Will surprisingly answers that listening to his supervisors and especially customers is something he finds trumps all areas of his position. Nick, one of Will's supervisor's says "Will is a dedicated worker who takes direction very well" and remarks upon how quickly Will has been able to adapt to "Wal-mart's fast paced work environment". Working in the Lawn and Garden Department of the Wal-Mart Supercenter, Will believes his experience and varied skills set will benefit him for many years to come.
