Arriving at the Elmwood Health Center at 4pm you can find Giovanny Mazariegos, smiling widely, preparing to start his shift. He is soft spoken, shy you may say, but eager and enthusiastic to show you around his place of work.
For the past two years, Giovanny has worked six hours a week in the Activities Department at Elmwood Health Center in Providence, R.I. Similar to many 23 year-olds, Giovanny Mazariegos has hopes and goals for the future, and although he started as a volunteer at EHC, his personable and "always willing" attitude have helped him obtain the skills needed to be successful in the workforce.
The Independence of Living on His Own
After working as a volunteer for about a year Gio was offered a paid position at EHC where he now works as a regular employee, from 4-7pm Monday and Friday. Gio's job ranges in responsibilities from prepping, serving and cleaning up after evening meal to engaging residents in activities such as a game of after-dinner bingo or movie-time.
Like any employee, Gio depends on reliable transportation to get him to and from work. Through Perspectives Corporation Gio is assigned a staff member who provides transportation and guidance in the workplace. With the help of these services Giovanny has had the opportunity to prove himself to be more than just a paid employee. His hard work and dedication have shown him to be the employee supervisors know they can count on. Often it is Gio who they call to come in to fill a shift, or to be an extra pair of hands for a special occasion. With the flexibility of his staff, the extra hours allow Gio a chance to build his work ethic and provide him with spending money to attend a movie with his friends or save up to see comedians such as Kevin Hart.
When asked what Gio likes most about his job, he replies, "helping people". Through his employment at Elmwood Health Center he has decided serving others is exactly what he wants to further his career in. Giovanny has goals of utilizing the skills he has gained through his employment at EHC to someday obtain employment at a doctor's or medical office; a goal he envisions quite clearly. Until then, Giovanny, through Perspectives' TSS (Transitional School Services) Internship program continues to grow, and serve the residents of EHC, who value his smile and gentle nature.
Giovanny, however, like any employee, depends on reliable transportation to get to and from work, a service Perspectives Corporation is able to provide for him.
A Productive Member of the Activities Department
Giovanny enjoys his work. Through the Perspectives' Transitional School Services Internship program, Giovanny has gone from volunteer to employee in a relatively short amount of time. With the help of Perspectives' staff who provide transportation to and from work, Gio has had the opportunity to prove himself as a productive member of the Activities Department at EHC.
Ultimately, Gio has goals of utilizing the skills he has gained through his employment at EHC and someday hopes to obtain employment at a doctor's or medical office; a goal he envisions quite clearly. Until then, however, he continues to work faithfully at the Elmwood Health Center to build up his resume and continue to hone his skills.
