Therapeutic Summer Program

The Perspectives Therapeutic Summer Program provides services to children with and without disabilities. Our program is designed to provide eligible children with opportunities to learn new skills by participating in therapeutic recreational activities. Our program is “ integrated” in that we provide services to children with and without disabilities. The result is that the children spend eight active and fun-filled weeks participating in recreational and skill building activities.

For eight weeks, the program strives to make every activity an enjoyable and dynamic learning opportunity. The program achieves its goals by incorporating academic learning, social skills, safety, community awareness, and exercise into the program's experience.

Appropriate activities are matched with the ages, interest, and developmental levels of each participant. Program schedules are designed to address specific Individual Education Plan goals that may include both academic and social skills development.

Each day, the program is structured by morning and afternoon sessions with alternate choices available to meet individual needs. The program runs from 9:00-3:00 (including transportation) and is located in Charlestown, Rhode Island.

Participants are transported to the program by a van that picks up the children at previously designated locations. Those with special transportation needs will be accommodated to the greatest extent possible.

Our Therapeutic Summer Program is designed to maximize learning, while giving young people the chance to enjoy summertime recreational activities in a safe and highly supervised setting.

Specific instructional activities include:

  • Social Skills Group
  • Academic Supports
  • Swimming (Lifeguard on duty)
  • Weekly Field Trips
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Overnight Camping
  • Recreational Sports (to enhance gross motor and structured exercise opportunities)
  • Educational and Recreational Visitors
  • American Sign Language (Instruction and activities facilitated by members of our Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program)

Students between the ages of 5 – 21 are eligible. Most children who attend the program qualify for Extended School Year services based on identified IEP goals. It is important to begin a dialogue with your child’s school as soon as possible to discuss Extended School Year options.
